Bio:
Liew Niyomkarn is a sound artist and composer with a background in film composition and experimental sound practice. Her work primarily explores layers of simplicity, note repetition, harmonic spectra, and resonances achieved through electronic and acoustic instrumentation, as well as the relationship between sound and spatial perception. She employs these elements to craft diverse tunings and acoustic properties. She integrates field recordings to capture the essence of time and the narration of memory through composition—its polyphonic characteristics, slowness, revealing sound textures, and the manipulation of extended decays.
Liew holds an MFA from CalArts and studied Sonology in The Hague. She has presented her work at venues and festivals such as High Zero Festival (Baltimore), Ghost festival (Bangkok), Bozar (Belgium), WORM (Rotterdam), STUK (Belgium), DAAD (Berlin), Rewire Festival (The Hague), Send + Receive (Winnipeg), Oscillation Festival (Brussels), Dour Festival (Dour), Meakusma (Eupen), Seendosi (Seoul), and Toneelhuis (Antwerp), among others. She has also led graphic score workshops and collaborated in a research group with her long-term collaborator, Velma Spell. Liew is based between Brussels and Bangkok.
